4 Ways Following Up on Applications Helps You Land the Job

When you apply to jobs online, prospective employers receive your materials in a matter of clicks. This instantaneous, paper-free process certainly has its perks, though it can often feel as though your application disappeared into some digital no-man’s land – especially if you don’t hear back from anyone. Instead of just assuming you weren’t a good fit for the job, take matters into your own hands by strategically­ (and politely) following up.

Following up on an application accomplishes four core things:

One of the most frustrating aspects of your job search is not hearing back from an employer after applying and fearing that your application went into a black hole, never to be seen again. Job “ghosting” is unfortunately common from both employers and job seekers, but if you send a polite follow-up message, you’ll increase your chances of hearing back.

If they haven’t received your application, return to the website or job board where you originally applied and try again, making sure to follow all of their requirements.

2. Demonstrates your genuine interest in the job

It’s likely that the hiring manager will receive a lot of applicants to the job, and many of them could be just as qualified as you. One way to stand out from the crowd is to show extra interest in the job, and following up on your application is a great way to do so. When choosing between two identical applicants on paper, but one of those candidates went above and beyond to show their interest, the hiring manager could be more likely to go with the passionate candidate.

3. Keeps your name top of mind

Similarly, following up on your application will make it more likely that the hiring manager will remember your name when it comes time to schedule interviews and pick whom to hire. The more memorable you are (for the right reasons), the farther you’ll make it in the application process. Be sure to prepare your answers to the most common interview questions so you can remain top of mind.

4. Provides you with a status update

When you follow up with the potential employer, there’s a good chance you’ll learn more than just if they received your application. You may be given valuable information, such as if the position is still open, how many individuals have applied, are interviews being scheduled, and more. Applying to jobs is stressful, and knowing more about what to expect can relieve some of that stress. If the job posing doesn’t specify what the next steps are, a follow-up message can help.

When Should You Follow Up on a Job Application?

A week after applying is generally the right amount of time if you haven’t heard back. Reaching out too soon may annoy the hiring manager and touching base too late defeats the purpose. And to avoid the risk of contacting them too often, only follow up once. Quick note of caution: If the job posting explicitly states “no phone calls” or sets a clear expectation for when applicants should expect to hear back, be respectful and adjust your strategy accordingly.
